What is a Sadaqah in Islam?

Sadaqa is charity given voluntarily in order to please God. Sadaqa describes a voluntary charitable act towards others, whether through generosity, love, compassion or faith.

These acts are not necessarily physical or monetary. Simple good deeds such as a smile, or a helping hand, are seen as acts of sadaqa.

Difference Between Zakat and Sadaqah ?

Zakat is an obligatory charity due from every Muslim on a yearly basis, Sadaqah is an entirely voluntary charity which can be performed at any time of year,and any amount can be given.

Sadaqah can be used for any project or programme which is of benefit to people.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said “Sadaqah extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire”

(Hadith, Tirmidhi).

You can give sadaqah on the behalf of the deceased

Sadaqah Jariyah is a gift that not only benefits others in this life but also benefits us and our loved ones in the next.

Examples of Sadaqah Jariyah are building homes, schools, hospitals, orphanages, water wells, and converting areas of land into farms that produce crops for many years.
